Each of the federal and provincial governments in Canada provides indirect funding through tax credits, and/or direct funding through grants and forgivable loans to the creators of feature films. Private funding is also available to encourage the creation and distribution of Canadian feature film productions. The following guide describes many of those resources and is a starting point to explore the available funding opportunities. For further suggestions about how to apply to funders and increase your chances of success see the sections on pitching for funding. Also, read the interviews with John Galway of the Harold Greenburg Fund and Shelly Gillen of Movie Central. The information provided here is current to June 2006. However, there are frequent changes in eligibility requirements and application deadlines for tax credit incentives, provincial and federal funding programs, and private sector funds. Consult funders directly for the latest information.
