HG Fund deadlines

Tip:
  • The HG Fund also has specific guidelines for presentation, with check-off sheets you can use to ensure all the parts and appropriate number of copies are included. They clearly state that incomplete applications will not be considered.
Check the website for up-to-date information, since deadline dates change each year. For 2006, the dates are:
  • Story optioning phase -- February 13, May 15, August,14, November 13
  • Script Development Program and Family Fund Script Development--January 9, April 6, July 6, October 5
Provincial
Each of the provinces may have the development funds available through their local cultural funding initiatives (please see Provincial Tax Credits and Incentives for a list of provincial funding resources). For example, the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) announced at the end of 2005 that it had a small amount of development funding available. In Prince Edward Island, Technology PEI offers loans for up to one-third of the development budget, capped at $25,000.  Since funding amounts and criteria can change, check out each province’s site for the latest information.

Applications

Tip:
  • Asking for less money than the maximum may help your application.
Competition is intense for the small pool of available development funds. Review the guidelines of each agency carefully, and apply with a strong project and team. For further application and pitching hints, also see Elements of the Pitch Package.

If your application is turned down
Apply again to the next deadline if you don’t get funding on your first application. Perhaps the competition was particularly severe in the first round.  If you are still turned down for funding, find out from the agency the particular issues that made your project unattractive for investment. Readers’ reports usually summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the project; try to find out if the sticking point is the producer, the writer, or the idea.
