Deadlines can change from year to year: for the 2006 –07 program the agency announced there was no set deadline and it would begin accepting English-language applications on May 15. Competition is very strong for these funds. In recent years, when it had two specific SAP deadlines a year, Telefilm averaged 158 applications per deadline and gave financing to 32 of those.

Tip:
  • Although the name of a screenwriter is not necessary to receive funding for the option phase, a list of potential writers is helpful to illustrate the producer’s vision for the project.
  • Look in Reel Stories for a feature interview with John Galway , president of the English language program for the HG Fund.
Story Optioning
At the beginning of the process, before any words are written, producers can apply for upfront funding to option a published novel, short story, play, article or opera written by a Canadian author. The ceiling covers the cost of the option plus $2,500 in expenses.

Script Development Program
The HG Fund finances four phases of script development for Canadian screenwriters or producers with established track records.
  • A producer, or a screenwriter with a letter of interest from a producer, can apply for up to $18,000 in funding for the Treatment to First Draft phase.
  • The second phase, First Draft to Second Draft, may advance up to $12,000 to a producer or an applicant with a letter of interest from a producer.
  • At the Final Draft stage, a producer can receive an advance of up to $10,000.
  • Producers with scripts at the Final Draft phase who have a commitment from a distributor can apply for Senior Project funding, which ranges up to $25,000.
Family Film Fund
For scripts targeted at children, youth and family audiences, HG’s Family Film Fund offers advances at two phases: Treatment to First Draft (up to $18,000) and First Draft to Second Draft (up to $12,000). All projects are reviewed for suitability for the target audience.
