Why You Need a Lawyer PDF Print E-mail

Saving time, money and aggravation

How you interact with your lawyer affects not only the relationship, but also his or her ability to get the job done effectively and efficiently. Remember these points:
  • Be Realistic: Don’t expect your lawyer to drop everything to deal with issues on your file.  The simple truth is that all lawyers have multiple clients at any given time who require something.  Try to give a heads-up if you know an issue is surfacing soon. While this isn’t always possible, lawyers appreciate the advance notice.
  • Prepare:  Documentation is  a big part of the business, and experienced producers learn they have to read carefully. Your lawyer is advising you on documents and contracts, and without reading them thoroughly, you won’t be able to ask the right questions.  The consequences could affect you later on in the process.
  • Time Is (Your) Money: Unless you are on a “flat-fee” deal, you will be charged nearly every time you talk to your lawyer. You can save money by efficiently using your time together. Completely review documents and note all your questions before going over them with your lawyer. Schedule longer phone or in-person meetings to discuss issues rather than peppering your lawyer with impromptu emails and voicemails. Those six-minute increments for quick calls can quickly add up to more than the fee for a one-hour session.
