Working with a Story Editor PDF Print E-mail

You want to make sure that they “see” the same movie you do, and that they will have a good rapport with the writer.

Tip:
  • Telefilm will not allow producers to pay themselves as story editors.
Established story editors are typically hired on the strength of their track record.  It is customary that, once you’ve researched a couple and determined you want to work with one, you simply ask him or her to take the job. You may have to pay a nominal fee for reading and commenting if it’s important to you that your choice read the script before you make a job offer.

While you are required to hire a Canadian writer to access Telefilm money, the story editor doesn’t have to be Canadian. However, you won’t be able to get a labour-based tax credit refund on non-Canadian story editors.

What happens when: the process

Step One: Contracting
Your contract with your story editor should address the following issues:
  • Number of passes on the script
  • Number of meetings
  • Fee and payment schedule
  • Credits and delivery dates for the draft(s) and polish
You’ll also want to make sure standard points are included such as the waiving of moral rights, and proof of Canadian citizenship (if needed for tax credit purposes).
  • Terms of delivery: The term for a phase of development varies based on the availability of the writer and story editor.  Typically it is between two and six months, and will include one draft and a polish.  A writer may be expected to deliver a draft in three to six weeks and a polish in one to two weeks.
  • Fees: While fees vary based on the amount of work required and the experience level of the story editor, typically you should expect to pay between $2,500 - $5,000 per phase.  A production fee may also be negotiated.  Production fees range substantially, but a guideline is .2% of the budget, capped at $5,000, payable on the first day of principal photography.
Contracts should be signed before the work begins, and payment should always be prompt.
