Creating and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships is all about long-term thinking. It is not about being liked, although that’s great too.  It is about consistently delivering great work, and being pleasant and principled in your dealings.

Be polite and sensible

Those guidelines break down into common sense and politeness:
  • Never lie (including lies of omission)
  • Be courteous
  • Be courteous to assistants (if you’re not, it always gets back)
  • Research before you pitch
  • Pitch material appropriate to the company
  • Be prepared
  • Respect their time
  • No means no
  • When negotiating, be as fair as possible while defending your company’s needs
  • Deliver what you say you’re going to deliver, when you say you’re going to deliver it
  • Spend as much effort trying to meet their needs as you would trying to meet your own
People in the industry play musical chairs all the time, and you never know where someone is going to end up. It’s just smart to be professional and courteous, all the time.
