Every time you submit a package for financing, you’ll have to include a synopsis and either an outline or treatment, depending on what financing you are looking for. Each document has different requirements and writing formats.

Your scriptwriter usually writes the outline or treatment, but not necessarily the synopsis.  Synopses are really sales documents, and the writer is not always the best person to flog his or her own material.  You may write it yourself, or hire someone who’s good at this very particular skill. There is no formal way to find a skilled synopsis writer. The best route is to check with other producers for a recommendation: perhaps they have worked with a story editor or unit publicist gifted in crafting a polished synopsis.

Synopses

A synopsis should be one page at most. It needs to succinctly show that your story plays out in a surprising but natural way, and that the ending is satisfying, emotionally and from a plot perspective. Synopses are best put in three prose paragraphs that mirror the typical three-act structure of a story.

Tip:
  • Always include the ending in a synopsis.  It’s a common mistake to think that excluding the ending will fill the reader with curiosity and compel him or her to drop every other script to read yours. This strategy will backfire. The reader needs to know that your story is solid, including the ending.
More than outlines or treatments, a synopsis is a sales tool designed to present your project in the most compelling way possible.  It is written in the tone of the script, and focuses on conveying the main plot. Getting deeply into subplots or giving too much detail about particular moments can create the sense that your story lacks focus. The synopsis conveys what the movie is promising the target audience -- unexpected character development, comedy, action, mystery -- and shows that the script delivers on the promise.
