Tips:
  1. WGC writers get paid a percentage of the writer’s fee upon signing, which may be before the financing begins to flow. So budget accordingly.
  2. The WGC IPA provides for fee reduction for low budget films (<$2million).
Maybe you can’t afford to work with a writer who is established.  Regardless of a tight budget, you still need a writer whose strengths match the needs of your project.  So where do you find talent that’s appropriate and accessible within your budget? 

Short films are a great source.  Check out the shorts sections at the Toronto International Film Festival, and other film festivals.  Also, don’t miss the Worldwide Short Film Festival, Canadian Film Centre shorts, Directors Guild of Canada’s Kick Start program, and any other short film program you can find.  Canadian shorts are also broadcast on television, for instance, on CBC’s Canadian Reflections, Movieola or Showcase.

Look for talent coming from film training programs such as:
  • Canadian Film Centre
  • National Screen Institute
  • Praxis
  • Local colleges and universities
Meet people through local professional organizations like WIFT-V or WIFT-T or through cooperatives such as Atlantic Filmmaker’s Cooperative or Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto. Organizations like these are all across Canada, and they’re a great place to start.

Fees for writers who are not members of the Writers Guild of Canada range from $1 up to sums in line with Writers Guild fees.  It is completely open to  negotiation.
